Can E10 be used in older cars?
There have been a number of changes in gasoline over the years without affecting the performance of older cars, including the phase-out of lead (an octane booster) in gasoline. Ethanol adds renewable, natural octane to gasoline - and works well in older engines. The "cleansing" nature of ethanol sometimes loosens residue in older, dirty fuel systems - causing a plugged fuel filter. A simple change of filter should solve the problem - and continues use of E10 will keep the system clean and should enhance performance.Does ethanol cause vapor lock?
The vapor pressure of gasoline is set by law-and is lower in the spring and summer than in the fall and winter. Vapor lock usually occurs when a winter grade of gasoline formulated for cold weather starts is used under summer-like conditions. All major automakers now use in-tank fuel pump, which are not subject to vapor lock like older in-line fuel pumps.
What is E85?
E85 is a blend of up to 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. E85 should only be used in a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV), with specially designed engines that automatically adjust to run on E85, E10, ordinary gasoline or any combination. There are millions of FFVs on the road. To determine if your vehicle is an FFV, check your owner's manual or gas cap.How will corn demand for ethanol production affect food prices?
According to a June 2007 study by John Urbanchuk of LECG, LLC, increases in energy prices exert a greater impact on food prices than does the price of corn. A 33% increase in crude oil prices (which translates into a $1.00 per gallon increase in the price of conventional regular gasoline) results in a 0.6% to 0.9% increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food. An equivalent increase in corn prices ($1.00 per bushel) would cause the CPI for food to increase only 0.3%. Higher energy costs affect food prices by adding costs to processing, packaging and transportation.
