Racers at the Pump

Atlanta motorists chatted with two American Le Mans drivers during an October 2, 2007 pump promotion. Peter Dumbreck, who drives the (#31) Ferrari F430 GT for Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing, and Tom Milner, driver of the (#18) Bell Micro Porsche for Rahal Letterman Racing, discussed their highly technical race cars and encouraged motorists to choose the higher-performance, cleaner air option at the pump.

During the promotion, customers pumped more than 1,500 gallons of ethanol-enriched fuel into their tanks. Watch drivingethanol.org for announcements of upcoming pump promotions in your area.

Recent UL Safety Certification Expected to Double E85 Fueling Locations

Expanding the availability of E85 is expected to increase the demand for this renewable fuel, now that Underwriters Laboratories has issued safety requirements for E85 fuel dispensing equipment.

This announcement will make access to E85 more convenient because companies that have been waiting will finally be able to offer E85 at their fueling stations. Estimates are that the current count of 1,300 E85 fueling stations could double in the next year.

25 States Display the "e"

The state fuel pump branding program is making its way across the country. The EPIC "e" pump label is now approved in 25 states, including Illinois.

The Illinois Corn Growers Association recently partnered with EPIC, the American Lung Association of Illinois and the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association to introduce a voluntary statewide brand initiative for ethanol-enriched fuel including E10 and E85.

"Switching to the new labels is voluntary, but it allows fuel retailers to capitalize on growing consumer awareness and the national brand-building activities being spearheaded by EPIC," said the organization’s Director of Operations, Robert White.

"More and more consumers are seeking out ethanol-enriched fuel, and this branding program will make it easier for them," he added. "The brand image will be consistent from pump to pump, from city to city across Illinois, and – eventually – across the entire United States."

North Dakota is the only state making it mandatory that fuel retailers use the "e" pump label. For the other 24 states, displaying the label is voluntary.
